Getting started

Install and updates

Downloading the app, moving it to Applications, and how Snitt updates itself.

This page covers installing Snitt from the DMG, what macOS asks the first time you open it, and how the app updates itself.

What you need

Snitt runs on macOS 15 (Sequoia) or later, on an Apple silicon Mac. The timeline export works with Final Cut Pro today; support for more editors is planned. An account is required.

Install

  1. Download the DMG

Get it from the download page. That link always points at the current build.

  2. Open it and drag Snitt into Applications

The disk image window shows the app and a shortcut to your Applications folder. Drag one onto the other, then eject the disk image.

  3. Open Snitt

Snitt is signed and notarized by Apple, so macOS opens it normally. The first launch may ask you to confirm you want to open an app downloaded from the internet.

  4. Sign in

Create an account or sign in with Google. See getting started for the rest of the first run.

Updates

Snitt updates itself. There is nothing to download by hand.

  1. It checks by itself

Snitt checks for a new version when it launches, and once a day while it stays open.

  2. You get asked before anything installs

When there is a new version, Snitt tells you and asks before it installs.

  3. Check whenever you like

Choose Check for Updates… from the Snitt menu, just under About Snitt. The same button sits in Settings → General → Updates.

  4. Turn the automatic check off if you want

Open Settings with ⌘, and switch off Automatically check for updates under General. Checking by hand still works. See settings.

How it works

Every update is signed with our release key, and the app verifies that signature before it installs anything. A download without a valid signature is refused.

The app talks only to our API for your account, your jobs and your files, and it refuses connections that impersonate it.

If something goes wrong

macOS says the app is damaged or cannot be opened. The download was probably incomplete. Delete the copy in Applications, download the DMG again from the download page, and install it fresh.

An update fails to install. The version you have keeps working. Download the current DMG and drag it over the old copy in Applications. Your account, profiles and projects are unaffected.

You are not sure which version you have. Choose About Snitt from the Snitt menu.

Updates are switched off in this build. Some internal builds carry no release signing key and say so in Settings. Install the copy from the download page instead.
