Editing a project

Keyboard shortcuts

Every shortcut in the app, including the J/K/L shuttle in review and the export keys.

Every key Snitt answers to, in one place. Review is built to be driven from the keyboard. See Reviewing the cut for what each action does.

Playback

Key Action
Space Play / pause
L Play forward. Press again to double the speed: 1×, 2×, 4×, 8×, 16×, 32×
J Play backward, same ladder
K Stop
⇧Space Play just the selection
← / → Move the playhead one word back / forward
⌘← / ⌘→ Move the playhead one frame

The ladder stops at 32× rather than wrapping. Changing direction starts it over at 1×. The speed badge under the preview cycles the same ladder with a click, and that one does wrap.

Editing the transcript

Key Action
⌫ Cut the selection
Esc Clear the selection
⌘D Show or hide cut material
⌘Z Undo
⇧⌘Z Redo

With the mouse: one click selects a word, double-click the sentence, triple-click the segment, and ⇧-click extends the selection. Right-click a word for Cut and Restore.

Suggestions

Key Action
⏎ Accept the open suggestion
⌫ Reject the open suggestion

Step between suggestions with the two chevrons beside the count in the transcript header. While a suggestion card is open, ⌫ rejects it rather than cutting your selection.

Finding words

Key Action
⌘F Open the find bar, or put the keyboard back in it
⏎ Next match
⇧⏎ Previous match
Esc Close the find bar

Adjusting a cut

These apply only while a resizing session is open — after pressing Adjust in the selection bar.

Key Action
← / → Nudge the active handle one frame
⇧← / ⇧→ Nudge it ten frames
⇧Space Play it as it stands
⏎ Done — keep it
Esc Cancel — undo this session’s moves

The timeline

Key Action
⌘- Zoom out
⌘= Zoom in

Pinching on a trackpad zooms too, and the slider beside the buttons does the same job.

Export

Key Action
⌘E Export to Final Cut Pro and open it
⌥ held with ⌘E Choose where the file goes first

The Export menu also carries Save as File…, which writes the same XML without launching anything, and the MP4 sizes. See Export to Final Cut and Export MP4.

The projects list

Key Action
← / → Move between project cards
⌫ Delete the selected projects (asks first)
⌘-click Add a card to the selection

The app

Key Action
⌘, Settings

“Check for Updates…” sits in the Snitt menu under About, and in Settings → General. See Settings and Install and updates.

If a key does nothing

Almost always, a text field has the keyboard. A find box or a timecode field gets Space, ⏎, Esc and the arrows before the review does. Click into the transcript or the timeline to hand the keys back.

The other case is a session that owns them: while a cut is being resized, the arrows belong to the handle you are dragging.
